This island is South of
mainland Australia with nearly 250km of water, The Bass Strait,
separating it from Victoria. It is one of only three of the world's
Southern Temperate Zones, with a temperature range ideally suited to
walking, although it can also be very wet. Over one third of the county
is protected, the Largest and most spectacular of these areas is the the
West and now has World Heritage Protection, though the amount to which
the environment should be protected seems to be a particularly divided
issue on the island. The island itself probably has the best mountains
in Australia and also contains more than its fair share of dense
rainforest. However the Eastern coastlines and islands provide much
easier and more relaxed walking altogether. Photographs from one visit.
In January 2007 and February 2007 we spent just over
three weeks in Tasmania. After an easy walk in Maria Island National
Park, we spent nearly a week in the Western Arthur's - most of it
huddled in a tent in freezing conditions and gale force winds. We had
better weather luck with the weather later in the trip, firstly on the Moonlight
Ridge Track and finally when we climbed Frenchman's Cap, in
Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.
