The Reserva Nacional Cerro Castillo lies between Lago Elizalde and the Rio Ibaņez, in Chilean Patagonia. Its mountain ranges rise to over 2000m and it contains a number of glaciers and permanent snow fields. At the heart of this reserve is Cerro Castillo (2675m) itself, which is a prominent landmark from the valley below and regularly attracts teams of international climbers. The area is an important sanctuary for the endangered Huemul (a species of small deer). Several other small mammals, including the Patagonian Skunk are found here as well. Photographs from one visit. During March 2008 we spent four days trekking the Cerro Castillo Circuit, starting from the small remote township of Villa Cerro Castillo and finishing at Las Horquetas Grandes. The route includes some spectacular scenery, including hanging glaciers, wild mountain tarns and rugged peaks. There are no huts but three basic campsites have been put in place along the route to limit the environmental damage caused by the increasing number of trekkers. |
