One of the world great mountain ranges, The Alps reach from Austria in the east to France in the west. They are commonly divided in to two regions, the Italian Alps are part of the eastern chain. The highest peaks are in the West, including Mount Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe. The highest in the eastern area is Piz Bernina. The mountain range was formed by the collision of the African and Eurasian plates, though the landscape has been altered by at least five ice ages.

Photographs from one visit.

In January 2007 as part of a long weekend in Italy we spent a day walking in the foothills of The Alps, starting from the Small ski village of Tarvisio.
