The Annapurna Himal dominates the town of Pokhara and Central Nepal,
rising to the summit of Annapurna itself at 8091m. In the west of the
area is the spectacular Kali Gandaki valley, one of the deepest in the
world. To the north is the Tibetan like country and the town of
Muktinath, a popular destination for pilgrims. In the middle of all this
is the Annapurna Sanctuary, a valley completely surrounded by the peaks
of the high Himalaya. The whole area is within the ACAP (Annapurna
Conservation Area Project) conservation park, which is a unique approach
to allow the many local Nepalese people to manage the area with a view
of conservation for development, promoting the local culture and working
towards a sustainable environment.
Photographs from one visit.
In November 2007 we walked completely around the Annapurna massif,
staying at the trekking lodges along the way. The trek involved crossing
the Thorung La at over 5400m before heading out down the Kali Gandaki. |
