Located in central southern Nepal, Royal Chitwan National Park is the oldest and best known of Nepal's National Parks, having been established in 1973. It is home to the One Horned Rhinoceros, the Bengal Tiger and over 200 species of birds. It is one of the few lowland areas in Nepal which still retains its natural habitat. The word Chitwan is derived from the old Sanskrit word Chitrawan and means 'picture forest'. The dominant ethnic group in this area is the Tharus, who gained a reputation as being resistant to Malaria, due to there ability to live in this area while the disease was rife here last century. Photographs from one visit. In November 2007 we spent three days in Royal Chitwan. During this time we walked and canoed in the jungle and spent a lot of time with elephants, including being able to bath the elephants, a very special experience. |
