The Mount Aspiring Region

The Mount Aspiring Region is in Otago, southern New Zealand and marks the end of The Main Divide of the Southern Alps. It stretches from the Haast River in the north to the Humboldt Mountains in the south. Most of the area is within the Mount Aspiring National Park which is part of the southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area.

Photographs from three visits.

In November 2006 we tramped the popular Rees Dart Circuit, together with two side trips to The Cascade Saddle and The Whitbourn Valley.
In March 2006 I tramped the Wilken and Young Valleys, starting at Makarora. Following that I walked the Routeburn and Caples tracks, starting from The Divide, north of Te Anau.
In February 2005 I spent four days crossing the Cascade Saddle and tramping down the Dart river, which is a highlight of my New Zealand tramping adventures.
