East Matukituki Valley to West Makarora via Albert Burn and The Wilken

The traditional route from The East Matukituki Valley to The Wilken Valley crosses Rabbit Pass by way of the Wilken Waterfall Face. Although marked this route is described as 'dangerous in all but ideal conditions', difficult and exposed.

Photographs from one visit.

In December 2006 thru travel via The Wilken Waterfall Face was not being advised by DoC, however we were very keen to tramp in this area. With the help of Moir's Guide we devised an alternative route via Albert Burn Saddle and the Mid Jumboland crossing to gain the Wilken Valley. The week long tramp was one of the most difficult and rewarding that we undertook in New Zealand. It involved the longest river ford (The Makarora), exposed snow slopes (Jumboland Crossing), a swimming section (Albert Burn) and difficult scrub (descending to Junction Flat).
