Stewart Island is known as Rakiura by the Maori, which means 'Land of the glowing sky'. This is as far south as you can go in New Zealand, Antarctica is the next stop. It is also the third Largest island of the country. Virtually all of the island is a National Park and it is characterised by impressive beaches, dense lush bush, undulating terrain and a great deal of mud.

Photographs from one visit.

In April 2006 I tramped the North West Circuit, an arduous nine to eleven day route visiting deserted beaches and wildlife rich bush. At Mason Bay, I saw Kiwi but didn't manage to get any photos.
