The
beautiful, symmetrical volcanic cone of Mount Taranaki or Mount Egmont
is at the heart of this National Park. It rises to over 2500m above the
surrounding landscape, a lush canopy of dense bush protected from the
development of the farmland that surrounds the park. Maori legend tells
how Taranaki was cast out by Tongariro after a jealous love triangle, he
journeyed in to exile forming the Wanganui River and now stands in
splendid isolation. Photographs from one visit.
In October 2006 we completed the AMC (Around The
Mountain Circuit) on Taranaki. In mixed weather, which ranged from
blizzards to heat waves we used a combination of the high and low level
circuits depending upon conditions.
