The first National Park in New Zealand, it was gifted by Maori Chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV. It has dual World Heritage recognition by UNESCO for its cultural and natural values. The volcanoes in the park form part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and over 17 eruptions have been recorded since 1945.

Photographs from two visits.

In September and October 2006 we completed a combined 'Around the Mountain' and 'Northern' Circuits, completely circling the cones of Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu (which had a Small eruption whilst we were on the track). Definitely still winter here, with snow covering the crater areas.
In February 2005 I walked the Tongariro Northern Circuit as part of a week long visit to the National Park.
