The Cairngorms is Scotland's Largest area of high country, some of which
lies in the newly created Cairngorms National Park. Because of the
latitude the whole of the plateau area is sub Antarctic in nature and
experiences the worst and coldest weather in the British Isles. Here
snow patches have been known to last for years at a time and the winter
storms are at their most ferocious. The area is suitable for extended
backpacking trips and contains some of the most remote county in the UK. Photographs from

In December 2007 we spent Christmas Week based in the
Eastern Cairngorms, in mixed weather conditions.
In
March 2005 after walking to Inverey from Blair Atholl, I enjoyed a week
of deep snow and fine weather.
In September 2003 three of us completed a four day backpacking trip
based around Ben Avon.
In September 2002 we backpacked from Glenmore across to Loch Avon and
The Lairig Ghru.
In July 2002 we passed through the Cairngorms on our Scottish 4000ers
walk.
Some scanned Photos from April 2000 when we had another week of deep
snow, making for difficult walking.
